History about popcorn ceiling: Popcorn ceiling is a spray on ceiling texture and was originally created in 1950’s and continued through 1980’s to cover imperfections on ceilings, also served as some acoustical values. Prior to 1978 popcorn ceiling contained asbestos and was used widely in houses and buildings. In 1978 a ban on asbestos was placed and all popcorn used after the ban considered to be asbestos free.

From 1980’s till now other spray on textures such as Orang epeel or Knockdown have gained more popularity and are used in building as drywall finishes.

PROCESS OF REMOVING ASBESTOS FREE POPCORN:

  • Remove all furniture from room.
  • Cover entire floor using heavy duty plastic (1.2 mil thickness).
  • Mask off all walls to floor line.
  • Remove any A/C vent from ceiling.
  • Please use appropriate facemask and clothes covering.
  • Using a pump sprayer spray water on popcorn (Don’t over spray too much water since it’ll result in yellow water stain and could result in damaging sheetrock and replacing it).
  • Sand ceilings using a drywall pole sander.
  • Inspect ceiling for any loose drywall tape or any imperfections. Some areas may seem bumpy and not completely flat, you may have to apply some drywall joint compound, float the ceiling and sand in order to achieve a completely smooth and uniform flat ceiling.
  • Texturing: using a ½ inch drill and a drywall mixer, in a large bucket mix joint compound and water. Amount of water needed depends on how large of texture desired. Smaller texture size requires more water. Using a hopper gun and air compressor shoot texture evenly on ceiling. Air Pressure is a major factor on texture size and density, please practice on a large cardboard prior.
  • Knockdown VS orange peel texture: process is exactly identical for both except for knockdown there is an additional step: After shooting the texture wait for 20 minutes then using a 12-18 inch wide drywall trowel and start dragging the texture till desired finish is achieved. DO NOT apply too much pressure while dragging which will result in removing entire texture and re-doing the entire process all over again.
  • Pre-painting inspection: Inspect entire ceiling for any rough areas which may need to be sanded down. If notice any yellow water stain use a stain blocking primer on yellow spots to prevent from bleeding through topcoat. If ceiling is ready for painting, first apply a coat of drywall high build primer first, and then topcoat using quality interior ceiling paint.
  • Final step: Re-install A/C vents and any fixtures that have been removed prior. Start removing plastic from walls, in some cases you may need to do some touchup on walls to get sharp lines. Remove all masking, vacuum all flooring and any other cleanup/dusting.
